Greater Oakton Community Association invites history enthusiasts to join a narrated historic bus tour led by acclaimed local historian Jim Lewis on from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please arrive at 9:00 a.m. at Oakton Community Park at 2841 Hunter Mill Road (next to the old schoolhouse and roundabout) for Jim Lewis's opening comments, then board the bus for departure by 9:30 a.m. The tour will end at 1:00 p.m. This 3.5-hour journey spans Fairfax County's history from its formation in 1742 through the early 1900s, focusing on sites primarily on or just off Hunter Mill Road. Participants hear stories of where the old mills and roads were located and learn about famed military figures (particularly from the Civil War era) and colorful residents who graced the area. Numerous period photographs support the narrative, bringing history to life. Walking requirements are minimal, although one segment involves going down a slight grassy decline. The tour runs rain or shine. Snacks and water are included. Cost is $45 per seat. In the event of cancellation, refunds are provided if a replacement is found for the seat; a wait list is maintained for this purpose. There are 23 seats on the bus.
